Ambitious plans to convert a former chapel and HQ of Falmouth Theatre Company into a community space have been dropped after permission expired.

Instead the new owner of The Old Chapel in Chapel Terrace, Vernon Place has applied to turn the entire property into five-bedroomed family home.

The former chapel had been used as the HQ for the Falmouth Theatre Company for 30 years, but considerable maintenance costs meant that the building was sold.

The previously approved application PA21/00434 was for the change of use from chapel to a mixed-use development.

It would have seen the existing theatre space on ground floor level kept for community use with the insertion of an additional first floor to allow for an apartment at the top occupying the first floor and rear existing extension.

This project was never completed on site and the planning application has now expired after being granted on April 1, 2021 and the building was sold on again.

In its application the architect says the proposed development's location would ensure the new residents will have the opportunity of living in a unique home within walking distance of local facilities and transportation services.

“As the front elevation pediment must be rebuilt, the opportunity to redesign the circular feature to provide a modest circular window, affording views of the harbour was taken.

“Lowering and retaining the circular form is in keeping with the primitive Methodist design language. Likewise the replacement of the unsafe asbestos roof sheets, in favour of natural slate, demonstrate a commitment to enhance the asset in the conservation area.

“The addition of a roof terrace and inset balcony was not deemed to impact the principal elevation or clutter the roof as to impede on the setting of the conservation area.”
