There are more than just cheesy grins for the team behind a new food takeaway van in Falmouth after they win an award just months after opening.

Bisty’s grilled cheese sandwich company, based at a permanent pitch on Cliff Road (on the way from Castle Beach to Gylly), has been named the winner of 'The Best-Looking Truck' in this year's British Street Food Awards.

Behind the venture is Christian Dann, whose family previously ran Muddy Beach Café in Penryn. Christian, who was managing director of the café before the lease was sold to new owners in 2022, said he wanted to do something smaller and to offer the people of Falmouth a product that he hoped everyone loved.

He was looking for "something unique" when he came across 'Sandy' – a 1970s step-van that was previously used as an ice cream truck in San Diego, California. After six months of renovations, a converted GMC truck emerged, complete with a built-in coffee machine and griddle.

The van's retro charm, combined with its sleek modern design, made it a standout contender in the Best-Looking Truck category. Christian (aka The Big Cheese) said he was "chuffed" after finding out Bisty’s had won the award, which took place at Hackney Bridge.

Despite strong competition, including a company with over 40,000 Instagram followers, Bisty’s emerged victorious. "I am chuffed that we have won this award. We were up against very strong competition," Christian told the Packet.

"I want to thank all the voters, and a huge thanks to the locals who have made this possible, thank you."

Christian also shared a special thanks to Millie, who has been a huge part of the business since it launched and played a key role in the truck refurbishment.
