An accomplished florist has realised her dream of returning to Falmouth to open her own dedicated shop ten years after she graduated from the town’s university.

Emily Douglass, 29, is opening Lowena Flowers at 51 Killigrew Street this Saturday with her blooms inspired by the beauty of Tuscany and the charm of Cornwall.

Emily trained in London as a florist and has since gained extensive experience across the country and in Tuscany.

Having lived in the Falmouth area over the past ten years, Emily says she has fallen in love with Falmouth’s vibrant community and is looking forward to welcoming everyone to the shop to share her love of flowers.

Her move into floristry came came during a trip to New Zealand after graduating where she decided she wanted a change of direction.

“I decided to have a complete career change and retrain in floristry,” she told the Packet. “I’m so excited, I wanted to do it since I started floristry.

“I always wanted to have a shop in Falmouth. Everything’s done online these days and there’s less of a community feel. I want people coming in to hand pick flowers then help me design their bouquets.”

She said the reaction has been really positive from people walking past with them excited about the opening.

“I’m passionate about having a healthy high street and providing a florist service to Falmouth so that everyone can experience the joy of flowers in person,” she said.

She says she is also passionate about being as eco-friendly as possible and supporting the local community - using locally grown stems from farms based in and around the area and avoiding plastic wherever we can, stocking the first locally grown peat free house plants.

She is also creating a space for community workshops in the evenings for isolated and older people.

“I think community is so important,” she said.

Lowena Flowers is the first dedicated florist shop to open in Falmouth for a long time. There used to to be the famous Jackie Phillips Flowers which then became the Flower Studio before closing as well as Izella Rose on Killigrew Street which also closed.
