The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is inviting visitors to join them in celebrating the remarkable 50th birthday of one of its residents.

On Saturday, September 21, Sheba – who is thought to be the oldest grey seal living in human care will turn 50 years old.

Sheba has lived at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for much of her life since founder Ken Jones rescued her as an injured pup in 1974.

“Reaching 50 is a huge milestone, not just for Sheba but for everyone here who has been a part of her journey,” said Tamara Cooper, curator at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

“It’s certainly a testament to the advancements in veterinary care and the specialised attention we provide for animals here at the sanctuary.”

Before she arrived at the seal sanctuary, it was documented that Sheba was initially cared for by Ken and his wife at their home in St Agnes.

Throughout the years, the gentle seal has become a favourite among visitors and staff alike with her playful personality and love for enrichment activities.

“The bond we’ve developed with Sheba over her lifetime is something truly special,” Tamara added.

“We’ve seen her grow and adapt, and we’ve worked hard to provide the best quality of life for her.

Sheba requires constant monitoring and regular medication for an eye condition, which has left her partially sighted, and even though she is an old girl, she is still very active, learning new skills and interacting with our Animal Care team.

“This milestone is such a proud moment for all of us.”

To celebrate Sheba’s 50th birthday, the Sanctuary is inviting its supporters to join them for an afternoon of celebrations this Saturday (September 21).

At 12pm Sheba will be surprised with a specially crafted, fish-shaped ice cake filled with her favourite seafood, and the team will sing Happy Birthday to her. There will also be an opportunity to send Sheba your ‘best fishes’ by colouring in a special birthday card for her.

As a special treat, the Sanctuary is offering anyone who is also fifty, a complimentary day pass to the Sanctuary on Saturday, September 21. Just bring a form of ID displaying your date of birth to the admissions desk to receive free entry on the day.

The Seal Sanctuary is also inviting visitors to donate some money on Sheba’s birthday to improve her pool at the sanctuary which needs improvement.
