"As a precaution, the emergency services closed Green Lane at its junction with Helston Road and evacuated a number of nearby properties.

“Our engineers worked as safely and as quickly as possible and have stopped the leak, making the area safe. We are now working to make a permanent repair.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carry out this essential repair.

“If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.”

Peter Wooding a nearby resident who witnessed the incident said: “I heard it, I live across the road from it.

“Dashing out to see what it was, it was just a really loud, like a scraping sound, almost in slow motion. As it hit the houses, the front left-hand wheel folded up underneath the car.

“I have been evacuated, got my fingers crossed to have the road dug already and hope to be back in soon.”
