Advance notice of a gas pipe upgrade which will close roads in Penryn for four months next year has been announced.
Wales and West says it is upgrading the pipes in the West End area of Penryn to make sure the gas keeps flowing to heat homes and businesses in the area.
They say they’ll be investing £100,000 to upgrade the current metal pipes to new long lasting plastic pipes.
Wales and West will be holding a residents drop-in session on Wednesday, November 13 at the St Gluvias Community/Church Hall, Penryn TR10 8SG between 1pm and 5pm.
The work will start on January 6, 2025 on West End and barring any engineering difficulties, expect to be finished by May.
“We know how our work will be disruptive, so we have worked closely with Cornwall Council to keep disruption to a minimum,” says the company. “To keep the local community, road users and colleagues, traffic management will be in place while we work.”
From January 6 to February West End will be closed from the Junction of West End Close to Shute Lane. Traffic lights will be on West Street to allow access to residents. Two-way traffic lights to allow access to Calver Close.
Then from February 17 to April 14, West Street will be closed from the junction of Shute Lane to the junction with Lower Market Street. Traffic lights will be on the West End to allow access to residents.
The company says traffic management will be clearly signposted, and motorists are advised to allow extra travelling time.
Abby Smith, who is managing the gas upgrade work, said: “We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
Wales and West say the work is part of its multi-million pound, 30 year, gas pipe investment programme across Wales and the south west of England. Old metal gas pipes withing 30 metres of buildings are being upgraded to new, long lasting plastic ones.
