A Falmouth landlord says he is ‘delighted’ to have been presented with pub of the summer 24/25 by the body set up to promote the consumption of real ale (CAMRA).
Matt Reay, landlord of the Moth and Moon in Killigrew Street, was presented with the award last weekend by Cornwall CAMRA Chairperson Paul Waller.
The Cornwall Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, CAMRA Kernow, revealed The Moth and the Moon as the recipient of its award back in August but only recently handed over the accolade.
The pub, run by real ale enthusiast Matt, won the vote at a recent branch meeting ahead of five other nominees.
It now becomes the second pub to go into the final for the Cornwall CAMRA pub of the year 2025.
The nominated pubs were judged on a variety of qualities including:
• Quality of real ale/cider.
• Style/décor/furnishings/cleanliness.
• Service/welcome/offering.
• Community focus and atmosphere.
• Alignment with CAMRA principles Cornwall CAMRA.
Chairperson Paul Waller visited the pub last Saturday lunchtime and presented the certificate to licensee Matt.
“The Moth and the Moon is a deserving winner as they serve a fantastic ever-changing range of Cornish real ales, always kept in great condition,” he said.
“The pub is very friendly and like any proper pub should appeal to a broad range drinkers of all ages. Even more pertinent for a boozer winning pub of the season (Summer) is that is claims to have the best sunny beer garden in Falmouth!”
Matt, owner/landlord since January 2020, said he was surprised and delighted to receive the award and would serve an even broader range of ales if his cellar had the capacity!
Before taking over The Moth and Moon Matt managed the 'Front in Falmouth for 15 years.
The Front was named CAMRA Kernow Pub of the Year in 2018 under his leadership, among its many award wins.
