The progression of a soon-to-be restaurant in Helston is "coming along nicely," according to its owner, who has shared updates on its development and when it could be open.

Wahiduz Zaman, the owner of Razzah, has revealed more information with the Packet about the progress of his new restaurant, which is taking over the former Trelawney's nightclub at 25 Coinagehall Street.

“We’ve been working hard, and everything is coming together nicely,” Mr Zaman told the Packet. “The interior renovations are focused on completion, and we’re thrilled with how the space is shaping up.

“We’ll be assembling a team soon and look forward to opening our doors in the coming months. We can’t wait to welcome everyone.”

Mr Zaman said there was not yet an official opening date but reassured people that it will be in around three to four months' time.

Mr Zaman first applied for planning consent in January 2023, asking for permission for the conversion of the nightclub's ground floor level into a restaurant and hot food takeaway, and the conversion of the upper floor into three residential units.

After the planning department at Cornwall Council approved the application, with conditions to consider the residents and surrounding businesses in the town, Mr Zaman said that the building was left in a “very, very sorry state”.

Having struggled to find a local contractor with availability to repair the damaged roof before the summer, he eventually managed to do the work by bringing in contractors out-of-country, only for the cold weather in December to cause a pipe to burst, resulting in flooding.

Mr Zaman told the Packet that once South West Water has installed a water supply system in the building there will be one final push to finish everything.

Before the restaurant officially opens, members of the community have been invited to share their suggestions on what they want to see on the menu.

Originally, the decision on what the menu would feature was down to Mr Zaman’s Falmouth-based business partner, but now the community are having a chance to suggest what theme they would like to see.

Mr Zaman said: “We’re gathering feedback to fine-tune our menu, focusing on a local perspective; that’s why we have asked the community for their suggestions and input.”

More than 200 comments were left on the post on Razzah’s Facebook page, with a range of suggestions from Indian to Thai, to World Cuisine, Italian and Mexican dishes on the menu.

Ahead of the opening, Mr Zaman stated that the restaurant would employ four full-time members of staff and two part-time.

Cornwall Council approved the application with conditions that included the opening hours of the restaurant being between 5pm and 11pm, Monday to Sunday, to prevent any disturbance upon residents in properties nearby.

Mr Zaman already owns a number of businesses including Sultanz Restaurant in Camborne, serving Indian and Bangladeshi dishes and Zaman’s in Newquay – which in 2022 won the Editor’s Choice category in the Curry Life Awards in London’s West End under the skills of chef Mo Miah.

The building at 25 Coinagehall Street was Grade II listed in May 1972 and was initially a townhouse before later including a shop. It was built in the late 18th century, with the existing shop front windows fitted in the late 18th century, with the existing shop front windows fitted in the 1990s.
