The young artist behind the stunning mural in one of Cornwall’s most popular tourist towns has said she is “proud” to be involved in the project.
On Wednesday the Packet reported on the latest project in Newquay, which is seeing murals being painted on buildings in the town to form a trail.
One that has really captured the attention of both locals and visitors alike is a mural inspired by Newquay’s historic fishing industry.
Taking inspiration from photographs at Newquay Museum and Archive, the painting covers the entire end of wall of a house in Fore Street and features a fisherman tying nets by candlelight, in the style of the ‘old masters’.
Incredibly, the artist behind it is just 20 years old. However, while she may still be young Elle Koziupa has a portfolio behind her that would be the envy of someone twice her age.
After completing her A-levels she started working as an apprentice but quickly became a fully-fledged artist, working on projects with global brands such as Burberry and the Moncler x Adidas campaign.
She is now part of the team at Global Street Art, which describes its work as “transcending traditional canvases”, with the organisation having created more than 500 murals nationally.
Speaking about her latest project in Newquay, Elle said: “I’m super excited to share this one, and proud to be a part of hopefully many more!
“It is paying tribute to the deep history of Newquay’s fishing.”
Elle uses a combination of spray paint and hand painting to create her murals, with the help of scaffolding boards to enable her to get close up.
She described her work as having a “Renaissance-inspired aesthetic” and said she hoped it would start a dialogue between art and the community.
Elle showcases many of projects on her Instagram account @ellespaint
They include a mural of the Chinese actor and singer Xiao Zhan – also known Sean Xiao – in London to promote him becoming the first global ambassador for Wedgwood china, and a temporary mural of Joan of Arc in Sheffield.
Newquay’s fisherman mural is the second of a number forming part of the MUQY Street Art Walking Trail, by Slapdash Studio. The project has been commissioned by Experience Newquay and is in collaboration with Newquay BID - a project from Cornwall Council, aiming to revitalise the town’s high street.
The first mural is on MIX NQY’s wall on East Street. Overseen by Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio and created by Cornwall-based artist Kleiner Shames, using ideas generated at a workshop hosted by Youth Art Connect, it captures an abstract beach scene.
Newquay BID is also seeking additional walls for next year.

The fisherman has attracted rave reviews, with fans leaving comments such as “Just wow! I love how you've captured the natural glow from the candle. It looks incredible!” and “I am blown away by your talent! Congratulations on such a piece of beauty.”
