Three people had to be rescued from the sea after being caught in a rip-tide at a popular Falmouth beach at the weekend.

Falmouth Coastguard rescue team were called to Gyllyngvase Beach on Saturday to reports of one person I the water unable to make it back to shore.

By the time the team arrived, along with Porthleven Coastguard Team and a senior coastguard operations officer, the person had been rescued by members of the public.

They were stretchered by the team to a nearby waiting ambulance.

The team were stood down and had started to return to station when they were contacted again by Falmouth Coastguard which had received another 999 call from Gylly Beach about another person in the water.

The team returned and helped members of the public to recover a woman from the water giving her first and handed her over the ambulance crew who were quickly on the scene.

While they were treating her another male swimmer got caught in the rip tide and was seen to be in distress.

In a post on Facebook, the coastguard rescue team said another swimmer managed to get a tow float to him but he was still unable to make it back.

“A coastguard Rescue Swimmer swam and carried out a 'tethered swim' to rescue the man and bring him back to shore,” it said in the post. “Another ambulance was requested, and he was treated by the crew.

“Several members of the public, including an off duty senior Coastguard Officer and an off-duty lifeguard also helped throughout. A big thankyou goes out to all those people.”
