A PROPOSAL to turn a listed former bank into a wine bar is among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council.

Mr and Mrs D O’Neill, of Ilminster, Somerset, are seeking pre-application advice about the possibility of converting a Grade II listed former bank into a wine bar with living space above for their family.

The former Lloyds Bank premises in Fore Street, East Looe, sits within Looe Conservation Area, and was originally two houses before being converted into a doctor’s surgery and then the bank.

The pre-app states: “Former uses have resulted in substantial alterations to the interior and erosion of heritage values and significance. Its significance lies largely in its street-facing façade which contributes to the 19th century character of the development along Fore Street.”

Proposals are at an early stage of development pending pre-application consultation but include comprehensive refurbishment of the whole building to return it to a single, family home for the applicants with use of the ground floor for a commercial premises, operated by them.

Homes at former caravan park

The development, if approved, would be on land which used to form part of a caravan and camping park, which ceased trading in the summer of 2020. The site was then sold  to the current owners.
