An end of era has been announced with the departure of the current owners of Britain’s most southerly café after more than 30 years.
The Hendy family Victoria, Luke, Peter announced they are leaving the Polpeor Café at Lizard Point, Cornwall on Facebook yesterday.
The family says after a lot of hard work and determination in building up the business it was time to let go.
“Together with a lot of hard work and determination they built up this unique business,” they said in the post. “The time has now come for the family to let it go.
“We would like to thank all our amazing staff past and present. Polpeor really wouldn’t be the same without you all.
“We would also like to thank all of our customers who I know that Polpeor holds lots of special memories for you as much as it does for us.
“Finally, we would like to thank the National Trust for all of their continued support and the great working relationship that we have.
“We truly wish all the best to the new beginnings at Polpeor, Britain’s Most Southerly Café, whoever it may be.”

The post resulted in hundreds of comments from people all over the country, some of whom had been visiting the café for more than 50 years, even before Peter took over.
Peter Hendy first took on the lease in 1994 and, along with his wife Jackie and the rest of the family, have run it for more than 30 years. The café’s claim to fame is that it is on the southernmost tip of England.
Typical of the nearly 400 comments posted was this one from Joanne McCleery who said: “So sad to hear this. I’m 54 & I’ve been coming every year for as long as I can remember. Brought my children & now my grandson too. We all love it. Whoever takes this over, please don’t change anything, it’s just perfect as it is.”
While Jude Wilding said: “Love this cafe, we first visited 30 years ago and have been most years since - the best part of our headland walks. Always such lovely, friendly staff. Wishing you all lots of happiness in the future, you will be missed.”
