Mawgan Recreation Hall is getting a new lease on life thanks to a £200,000 grant from the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Work to upgrade the facility near Helston began on September 1 and is being undertaken by the main contractor Mister Modular, overseen by architect Paul Gendall.

When complete, the improved facilities will include an externally accessible toilet, a new entrance and patio area, internet facilities, and a much larger main hall.

The project, spearheaded by the Mawgan Parish Council and Recreation Hall Committee, has been made possible by the grant.

In addition, a new kitchen will be added thanks to an £8,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund and £55,000 combined match funding from the Parish Council and Recreation Hall Committee has also been contributed

By modernising and expanding this much-loved space in Cornwall, it will have a much more positive impact on the whole community.

The hall hasn't seen any investment since the 1980s, making it outdated and impractical.

Once works are complete, the building will be more accessible and fit for purpose, supporting and enabling community engagement.

Modern facilities and a larger footprint will allow the hall to be used by new groups and host events like summer concerts, film screenings, and wedding receptions.

With the upgrade in full swing, the hall is hoped to be open for a New Year celebration in January.

"We are so excited to have been given these grants," said a spokesperson for the Recreation Hall Committee. "We've been dreaming about improvements to the Hall for years and now thanks to these generous funds it is becoming real."
