A Cornwall brewery has celebrated recent award wins with an event bringing together both beer fans and its local community.
Treen’s Brewery, in Ponsanooth, has been presented with national and regional awards from the Campaign for Real Ale. This took place at The Stag Hunt, in the village, on Saturday.
The pub is the official taproom for Treen’s beers, with four or five of the brews available all the time. On Fridays, customers can call in to pick up pre-ordered take-outs.
“We trialled it and it seemed to go down well,” said Sarah Treen, who runs the brewery with husband and brewer Simon. “We've also got our local shop doing pizza deliveries to the pub so it's a good Ponsanooth enterprise going!”
The pub is a former tied house, but is freehold these days, with Treen’s brews proving enormously popular, especially session brews Sunbeam and Classic.
“We're really pleased to be working alongside the Stag in this venture,” said Sarah. “While there has been a big increase in brewery taprooms in the last few years, we've always felt that the traditional pub is at the heart of our business ethos, so hopefully we can now combine the best of both worlds – a great pub with a fantastic range of beer – with less than half a food mile racked up!”
The national CAMRA award is for Smoulder, a ruby, slightly fruity ale, with a note of wood smoke on the aroma, which really comes into its own in autumn.
In South West judging for Champion Beer of Britain, there was silver for Cloud Cuckoo, a warming, full-bodied, malty winter ale, and bronze for Resolve, a strong dark brew with chocolate and coffee notes.
Cloud Cuckoo has been a consistent award winner for Treen’s, and has helped the brewery win at least one award a year since it was established eight years ago.
The Stag Hunt was busy on Saturday with CAMRA members and locals, all keen to congratulate Simon and Sarah on their awards haul. The presentations were made by Vince Curtis, CAMRA’s brewery liaison officer for Treen’s Brewery.
