New life could be breathed into the site of a once popular derelict pub now described as a "blight on the landscape", writes Local Democracy Reporter Lee Trewhela.
Tredrea Inn, which overlooks Porthcothan Bay between Newquay and Padstow, closed in 2021 and has since fallen into disrepair. It is described as a “blight on the landscape” in a new planning application.
Applicant BL Property Development Ltd is hoping to bring it back to life by demolishing the current empty premises and building a new pub and restaurant with 30 bedrooms.
The company’s aim is to open it all-year round “bringing social life and employment opportunities during the winter months. Therefore, a spa and gym facility are included as well as cosy living room spaces, a deli and a small performance space”.
The current building was a private home in the 1940s and 1950s and then became a tea room. Following that it was converted into the public house.
The application states: “Reinstating the social amenity that has been lost in Porthcothan is central to the scheme.
"We see this place as a pub and restaurant with rooms and somewhere you can pop in for a drink, pick up something from the deli or book for dinner. Musical recording and performance spaces have been included to offer a facility for local artists to perform and make music.
“We have engaged with the residents of Porthcothan and surrounding area for input and feedback into the scheme. We want this to be open all year round for enjoyment and employment opportunities in all seasons.”
