Falmouth and Truro Greenpeace members gathered with local MP Jayne Kirkham on Saturday to talk about climate issues.

The meeting, part of a National Day of Action, saw members of Climate Action Groups from across the country meeting their constituency Labour MPs to discuss both local and national climate change issues.

This comes 100 days after the Labour Government was elected.

The meeting was held at Hooked on the Rocks, overlooking Swanpool Bay and the Swanpool, as the area is potentially one of the first local victims of climate change.

Mr Kirkham answered various questions about local issues, including bus services, the rail link to London, funding for the Mid Cornwall Metro, and sewage pollution.

The national issues discussed included the Climate and Nature Bill, set to be reintroduced as a Private Members Bill by Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage.

Greenpeace Falmouth coordinator, Simon Hart, said: "One of the main subjects of discussion was the recently announced support for Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage, which Greenpeace and other environmental organisations consider simply a 'get out of jail free' technology for the fossil fuel industry and currently simply doesn't work at scale.

"It was impressed upon her that it would be far better to spend that £22 billion on investing in renewables."

Greenpeace member and Green Party councillor on Falmouth Town Council, Dean Evans, added: "We were very pleased that Jayne agreed to meet with us to discuss these very important issues, and relay our concerns back up the chain of command.

"Climate change will affect us all and could threaten our existence.

"It is vital that we work together to meet this challenge."
