A series of events and services will take place next month, as the community of Helston comes together to mark Remembrance Day 2024.
From November 9 to November 11, there will be an opportunity for people to gather with friends and family to remember the lives lost in conflicts across the world.
The Helston Poppy Appeal, now led by Stewart Paterson following Jenny Harvey's ten-year tenure, will officially launch tomorrow, Saturday, October 26. Volunteers will be collecting donations at Helston's Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Lidl supermarkets daily until November 9.
On Saturday November 9 there will be a special Remembrance Day concert at St Michael’s Church at 7pm.
The concert, organised by Jenna and her husband Stuart will feature performances from Helston Town Band and the Culdrose Military Wives Choir.
On Sunday, November 10, the annual Remembrance Parade will leave Trengrouse Way Extension Car Park at 10.30am.
The parade, led by Helston Town Band will then proceed to the Garden of Remembrance at Grylls Monument for a traditional service of remembrance.
Community groups, serving personnel and veterans, and members of the community are welcome to pay their respects who serve, have served and sacrificed in the line of duty.
The parade will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance, offering an opportunity for everyone to pay their respects.
In the afternoon on Sunday, wreaths will also be placed at the town's war memorial outside St Michael's Church as part of a service at 3pm.
On Monday, November 11, the Royal British Legion will lead the two-minute silence to commemorate Armistice Day.
At 11am, the nation will pause for two minutes to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in conflicts.
All are welcome to attend this silence at the Garden of Remembrance at the monument.
A spokesperson for Helston Town Council which is organising the Remembrance Parade said: “Both events mark a solemn but important time for the Helston community to come together, reflect on the sacrifices made by service people, and honour their legacy.
“Helston Town Council is proud to take on the organisation of the Remembrance Parade, while the Royal British Legion continues their long-standing tradition of leading the Two-Minute Silence.”
