Popular comedian Rhod Gilbert has praised the Cornish welcome after staff at the theatre he was performing at went “above and beyond.”

The Welshman is known for his stand-up comedy as well as being a regular panellist on shows such a QI, Would I Lie To You?, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Taskmaster.

He is currently touring the UK with his latest one-man show, Rhod Gilbert & the Giant Grapefruit, which charts some of more light-hearted and also poignant moments from his recovery from head and neck cancer.

He describes it as “a comedy show about navigating the dark bits and turning life’s giant grapefruits into something approaching lemonade.”

The 55-year-old was in Truro on Friday, for a one-night-only stop at the Hall for Cornwall.

However, he was both taken aback and touched by the welcome he received – sharing it in a video in Facebook entitled ‘What a welcome!’.

Recalling initially his visit in 2023, Rhod tells his fans: “Last year when I was here, at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro, I was feeling a little bit tired before the show and the staff here very kindly popped out - above and beyond the call of duty – and bought a little air bed and a pillow, for me to have a little nap before the show.

“A year later I’ve come back and they’ve gone one step further.”

He then pans the camera around to show a camp bed set up in his dressing room, complete with sheets, duvet and pillow.

Rhod concludes: “THAT is a Cornish welcome. Thank you.”

While it is not known if Rhod took advantage of this year’s nap facilities, it was at least put to good use by someone – Rhod’s dog, who can be seen in the video happily having a snooze on top of the duvet.
