A Falmouth family has once again turned their garden into a spooky spectacle and has raised more than £1,000 for a local animal charity.
The Phelps family from Boslowick are celebrating another successful year, after raising a total of £1,661 for the Last Chance Hotel on Halloween.
The Last Chance Hotel is a registered charity based in Cornwall that works to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused and neglected dogs and other animals.
For the past three years, Jo Phelps and her family have invited members of the community and beyond to celebrate Halloween in their garden, which transforms into a Halloween-themed Garden display, fit with spiders, tombstones and pumpkins.
Adding to the fun, Jo and her family hosted a colouring competition, with designs created by her son's girlfriend, a trainee tattoo artist.
This year, Jo told the Packet that they welcomed around 600 children into their garden, a 300 increase in visitors last year.
“We had a busy year last year, with around 300 people coming to the garden,” Jo said. “This year, we had about 600 people – my husband had to do crowd control!”
Despite the large crowds, Jo emphasised the positive feedback from parents. "Seeing the comments is just amazing," she said.
"So many parents have said how special memories have been made for their children.”
The Phelps family have held parties at their home in Boslowick for several years, with Jo adding that they “go all out for Halloween”.
“We always go all out for Halloween, everything on show in the garden is handmade and put away for the next event,” she said.
Their choice of charity is also deeply personal.
Jo, a dog groomer, works with the Last Chance Hotel, a charity that provides a haven for animals that have suffered neglect and abuse. "I wanted to keep it local, and as I have groomed dogs for the Last Chance Hotel, I decided we should fundraise for them," she said.
"This local animal charity aims to rehome as many animals as possible, but some are too damaged and are surrendered to LCH looking for peace and love before they die."
While Halloween may be over, the Phelps family's spooky garden remains open for visitors until Sunday, November 2nd.
To support their efforts and help animals in need, donations can still be made through their JustGiving page here: www.justgiving.com/page/boslowick-Halloween-1726172653109.
