A man who assaulted three men and three women leaving them with a “serious psychological and physical impact” has escaped going prison.

Taylor Crooks, aged 23, from Penryn, appeared at Truro Magistrates Court for sentencing this week after pleading guilty to one charge of assault by beating and two charges of assault by beating causing actual bodily harm of three women in Helston, as well as criminal damage to property and failing to surrender.

Crooks, of Shute Meadow, was also sentenced after being found guilty by Truro magistrates in January of assaulting three men at Five Degrees West, in Grove Place, Falmouth, now known as Fives Cyderhouse, on April 1 last year.

Crooks was given a total custodial period of 30 Weeks, suspended for 18 months.

The court heard that Crooks beat up the women in Meneage Street, Helston on July 18 last year causing two of them actual bodily harm.

Sentencing Crooks, magistrates said that the prison sentences, despite being suspended, were because of his failure to express willingness to comply with a proposed requirement for a community order.

They said the offences were so serious because of the “prolonged and persistent incidences with serious psychological and physical impact” on the complainants.

Crooks was also ordered to remain at his home address between 5pm and 12 midnight until November 7, 2024, and to co-operate with any reasonable instructions for the monitoring equipment to be fitted.

He was also ordered to abstain from drinking alcohol for 120 days until March 4, 2025 during which time he would be monitored.

He was also ordered to do 30 days unpaid work to be completed within 12 months of up to 120 hours.

For the assault by beating of one woman, Crooks was given a prison sentence of eight weeks, suspended for 18 months and ordered to pay compensation of £200 to the woman.

For assault of another woman thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm on July 18, 2023 in Helston, Crooks was given a custodial sentence of 18 weeks, suspended for 18 months and ordered to pay £200 compensation to the victim.

He was also ordered to pay Crown Prosecution Service costs of £860.

For the assault of another woman in Helston on the same day causing her actual bodily harm, Crooks was given a suspended prison sentence order of 12 Weeks, suspended for 18 Months, to run concurrent with the other sentences. He was also ordered to pay her £200 compensation.

For failing to surrender to police or court bail at the appointed time there was no separate penalty.

For causing criminal damage to the automatic front door to the value of £298.80 belonging to Spar, Helston he was ordered to pay the same amount in compensation.

His guilty plea taken into account in all cases.

Crooks was also sentenced for three assaults at Fives on Saturday, April 1 for which he had pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in a trial in January.

For the first assault by beating conviction, he was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months concurrent and ordered to pay the victim £200 compensation.

He was given the same sentence for the other two assaults on the other two men in the same place on the same date, with one consecutive to the previous sentence and the other concurrent
