Blind kitten Donut found lost and alone has died after a short battle with infection leaving staff at animal rescue centre where she was taken devastated.

Little Donut’s health took a sudden and rapid decline late Friday afternoon at the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) Cornwall.

She was assessed by Animal Vets in Hayle, and later by C-Vets emergency Vets.

A spokesperson for NAWT Cornwall said: “We are devastated to let you know that over the weekend, little Donut sadly crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

“Both NAWT staff and the Vets did everything we could for her but sadly, despite all our efforts, she was too weak to fight anymore.

“It is a truly sad day here at the centre. Although it is one of the realities of rescue and working with animals, it never gets any easier.

“We spend so much time getting to know each one that comes through our doors, and love them like our own.

“She was such a unique, sassy little character that will be missed very much. We chose this picture of her as one member of staff said, 'it just sums her up perfectly’.

“Sleep well little one.”

Donut was found at around three weeks old in someone’s garden. Whilst gardening, a local lady heard a noise and discovered a tiny black and white kitten, lost, cold, lifeless and alone.

After looking for her mum with no success, the little one was brought to the local vets for some TLC and fluids, and with nobody coming forward as the kitten’s owner, she was taken to the NAWT in Hayle, and was given her new name!

She was initially very weak and staff  worked with her every day and night since her arrival.

After further monitoring and a visit from the vet, it was discovered that Donut was in fact blind.
