Krowji, Cornwall's largest creative hub, is set to unveil 19 new sustainable container studios.

The studios will be revealed at this year's Open Studios event, taking place from November 29 to December 1.

This marks a significant milestone in Krowji's Phase 3 development after a fire in May 2021 destroyed 15 artist studios, workshops, and offices.

The new studios are designed to accommodate dynamic and higher-risk disciplines such as sculpture, installation art, leatherwork, small-scale woodwork, ceramics, jewellery making, and audio art.

Each studio is crafted with functionality and durability in mind, with sizes ranging from 9 to 25 square metres.

A new Krowji courtyard is also taking shape in the centre of the space, with gathering areas, trees, wildflowers, and a Redruth community planter.

Krowji director, Elisa Harris, said: "The launch of our new studios marks a major turning point for Krowji and we’d like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the vast numbers of individuals and business, within the Redruth community and further afield, who reached out to us following the fire three years ago.

"Your support for our creative community and unfaltering belief in the work we do has played a significant part in helping us to get to where we are today.

"We hope you will come and join us in celebrating at Christmas Open Studios."

One former Krowji tenant, who lost her studio in the fire, expressed her excitement about moving into one of Krowji’s new container studios.

Sinead O’Connor said: "I am really looking forward to moving into my new container studio at Krowji.

"It is extremely difficult to find places that allow use of kilns, forges and anvils for heritage crafts like mine.

"It will be fantastic to be surrounded by other craft artists using traditional skills in contemporary ways.

"I am hoping we can do some collaborations in the future as well as teaching people about our craft."

The creation of these studios has been made possible through a £382,819 grant awarded by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, managed by Cornwall Council and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

This grant has not only facilitated the replacement of the lost studios but has also enabled site-wide improvements to sustainability and accessibility.

Fiona Wotton, Creative Kernow CEO, said: "We are delighted with the addition of these new sustainable container studios to the Krowji site.

"We are grateful for the vision and support of Cornwall Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for aiding Krowji’s recovery and our thanks extend to the Krowji community for their continued support during this period of change."
