The dream of a temporary community centre for the youth of Porthleven took a step closer to become a reality when the port’s councillors supported a planning bid at their last meeting.

Members of the town council considered revised plans to build a single-storey temporary building on the recreation ground at Methleigh Bottoms that would provide enclose a youth club and other leisure facilities.

If built, the community centre would have five years to prove there was a need for such a facility in Porthleven.

Although councillor Andy Wallis did not vote on the plans, as he is a member of Kerrier district council’s planning committee, he still took part in the discussions.

Mr Wallis said that youth facilities seemed to be the most pressing concern in the area, adding: “We have to start small. The group not very well represented in Porthleven is the youth.”

Facilities could then be extended at a later date to include arrangements for the elderly, he said.
