Luxulyan Village Hall played host to a full days bowling on Saturday when the local qualifying rounds of the ESMBA National Championships were contested.

Geoff Lane (Penlee), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Peter Hore (Holmans) claimed a clean sweep of wins in the Fours to win and get a championship place.

Second place went to Roy Christophers (Helston), Christine Coxall (Newlyn Trinity), Elise Daniell (Holmans) and Len Coxall (Newlyn Trinity). Peter Sully (Holmans), Dave Baxter (Holmans), Kathy Webb (Withiel) and Brian Webb (Withiel) took third place with Henry Kendall (Withiel), Meg Horrell (Withiel), Joyce Ward (Withiel) and Ken Horrell (Withiel) fourth.

The Triples proved to the closest competition of the day with any one of the four teams able to qualify going into the last round of games.

Eventual winners Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore made a late comeback to defeat Roy Christophers, Elise Daniell and Geoff Lane 6-4 in a tight match.

The result on its own did not appear to be enough as with two ends left in the game between Meg Horrell, Joyce Ward and Ken Horrell and Peter Sully, Kathy Webb and Brian Webb, Ken Horrell’s team held a lead which would have put them through. Brian Webb’s team had other ideas though claiming scores on both of the last two ends to win the game 8-7 but an earlier heavy defeat left them with an inferior shot difference.

Geoff Lane and Nigel Nicholls claimed the Pairs competition winning three out of four games. Second spot went to Nicholas Truscott and Peter Hore on shot difference from Joyce Ward and Ken Horrell in third. Brian and Kathy Webb took fourth with Peter Sully and Dave Baxter fifth.

The final competition of the day, the singles, saw Geoff Lane and Peter Hore undefeated in the group stages and meet in the final which Peter Hore won comfortably with a score line of 11-1.

The winners go forward to play in the ESMBA National Championships held in the Midlands from April 2 to 5.
