IF Helston’s defence had turned up to this match they would have won the game comfortably, however their performance at the back was nothing short of shambolic as the Jolly’s Combination League side conceded seven goals against a side below them in the table.

The first goal for Holmans came following a corner, which Helston twice failed to clear before Danny Jewell volleyed the ball home.

Four minutes later and more poor defending from the home side allowed Holmans in for their second. The ball came in from the left and the Helston defence, missing the influential Graham Blake stood off and allowed Daniel Dell to fire in from 20 yards out. Helston worked hard for the rest of the half but it was Holmans who were looking the more dangerous of the two sides.

However, they did get back into the match just before the break when Colin Kettle squared the ball to Mark Goldsworthy, who then played a through-ball to inform striker Neil Southall who raced clear to slot the ball under the ‘keeper.

Helston, who had been on a reasonable run of form, lost the game early on in the second half with two quick goals.

The first came following a quick free-kick that Frazer Cadman hit goalwards catching a deflection on the way to fool Helston ‘keeper Barry Hennessy.

The second goal of the half came as, again, the Helston defence sat off allowing Mitchell to fire in a shot from 20-yards.

Helston looked as though they might be able to salvage something from the game midway through the half when Kettle played in Southall who raced clear to fire an excellent shot past the ‘keeper but as soon as they had taken the lead a through-ball in behind the Helston defence by Holmans found Dell who grabbed his second of the match. Dell then completed his hat-trick moments later when he fired in from an acute angle for a 6-2 scoreline. With ten minutes to go, and the game all but lost, Southall got his hat-trick after Robertson had gone down the left and and crossed to the far post. Helston then had two good chances well saved by the visiting ‘keeper before Southall crashed an effort off the crossbar.

However, Southall was not to be denied moments later when he headed in Helston fourth but any hopes of a remarkable comeback were dashed when Holmans added a seventh through a Jewell header.
