A last minute try by Dave Hall, from a length of the field move, saw Redruth slip to a disappointing defeat against their visitors from the Yorkshire Dales.

Overall the team as a whole under performed, Redruth had more of the game but on the day had a monopoly of the mistakes, who knows what the result may have been if Lewis Vinnicombe had grounded the ball when over the goal line early in the second period.

Redruth started with five changes to the side that drew at Blaydon, those made in the front row were part of squad rotation while Richard Carroll took the place of Luke Collins who has been below his best recently.

On a cold day the visitors laying up the slope were first on the scoreboard when Mark Bedworth punished an early Redruth indiscretion at the breakdown with a well struck penalty. During a lively opening quarter Redruth showed their intention to move the ball wide.

A turnover from a Wharfedale lineout established a good attacking position to allow scrum-half Mark Richards to move the ball wide for Reds’ skipper PJ Gidlow to crash over for try. Mark Scrivener’s conversion attempt drifted wide of the left hand upright.

The Reds sought to press home their early advantage and dominated both territory and possession but persistently made unforced handling errors as they tried to force the game.

Against the run of play it was the Dalesmen who struck next. A fine break by stand off Luke Gray set up a Wharfedale attack which saw the ball quickly recycled with forwards and backs combining well before Gray touched down to finish the move he had started, Bedworth converting.

The visitors lost number eight Tom Ball to the sin bin for 10 minutes for repeated team offences as a Mark Scrivener penalty just before the interval saw Redruth go into the change over trailing by two points.

At the start of the second half a good run by Vinnicombe took him over the line in the scoreboard corner but attempting to ground the ball one handed it slipped from his grasp and a golden chance was lost.

Redruth continued to press and two penalties in quick succession at the end of the third quarter by Scrivener established a four point lead. Peter Joyce has been in great form recently and was awarded the Reds man-of-the-match from the sponsors Dales for another strong performance in the loose.

Livewire skipper James Doherty an England counties player was inspiring his side who gained in confidence as Redruth failed to press home their advantage.

Following a long stoppage for injury another highly-rated England counties player Chris Malherbe came on as a replacement for the Yorkshire side and immediately improved their three-quarter play.

A series of attacks from inside their own half started to undermine Redruth’s position.

Deep into injury time Redruth were established in the Dale 22 a with a scrum feed and should have been looking to run the clock down.

However the ball was lost against the head and with Redruth unable to stem a series of attacks Hart crossed in hell fire corner for the winning score. Wharfedale have been in the relegation zone most of the season and after this win they can be expected to climb the table. Redruth have no game this weekend , January 17, and their next league game sees them travel to Polson Bridge for a game now of massive importance with Launceston which the Reds will need to win to keep their promotion challenge alive.
