On-screen messages about the digital switchover will start appearing on analogue TV channels across Cornwall from today, warning about chance to the Redruth transmitter group.

In just under six months’ time the transmitter group that serves west Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will start switching to digital television.

The first stage of the switchover will take place on July 8, with the second stage on August 5.

From today, analogue viewers will see a series of intermittent messages such as: “This TV gets its signal from the Redruth transmitter group, and needs to be ready for digital switchover on August 12, 2009. Questions? Call Digital UK on 08456 50 50 50.”

Bill Taylor, south west regional manager for Digital UK, said: “Research has shown that captions are a very effective way to tell viewers their television will definitely be affected by switchover, and when it will happen. Viewers in the westcountry who see the messages know they have to get ready.”
