ASDA Penryn is celebrating the success of staff member Len Lewis today, who picked up the company's most coveted award, the ASDA Service Hero Award 2009, at the company's "Oscars" ceremony.

Customers and colleagues are all able to put forward nominations and each month, in every store and depot across the UK, a "Shining Star" is selected.

Once all the nominations have been received each store and depot then chooses its overall Shining Star of the Year from the previous 12 months' winners.

This year Len was nominated by the store for his tireless fundraising in the area. O ver the past two years, Len, with the support of the store and its customers, has raised a staggering £10,000 for the "Precious Lives Appeal". The appeal was created to raise much needed funds to build a hospice in Cornwall which will be called Little Harbour.

Little Harbour will be built on the outskirts of St. Austell in order to provide a place of respite and care for families with children that are terminally ill.

The hospice will be closer to home for families in Cornwall, at the moment the nearest Hospice in the area is either in Oxford or Somerset.

Len was one of 37 colleagues that had been nominated as regional Service Hero awards throughout the UK.

People director David Smith said: "Len is truly a shining star, and a colleague that has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty.

"I could not think of anyone more deserving of the award this year. Len is able to inspire colleagues at the store to go that extra mile for charities in the area and the customers they serve."
