PENRYN METHODIST CHURCH: On Sunday morning the Annual Covenant Service was conducted by the Rev Arthur Cowburn, with Myra Bennett providing the accompaniment for the hymns from Hymns & Psalms.

The first reading was taken from Paul’s Letter to the Romans, chapter 12 v 1-2. The second reading came from the Gospel of St John v 1-10.

In his sermon Mr Cowburn spoke of the promises we make in the Covenant Service and told the story of man where Mr Cowburn used to work who joined the firm a few years before him. When he turned up for the job this man made a promise that he would work for the firm for ten years – not a day more and not a day less. Apart from his work at the firm he had a chain of gymnasiums through which he became a millionaire, but he kept his promise to the firm and still came to work until his ten years were up.

In the Covenant Service, God promises us new life in Christ. For our part we promise to live no longer for ourselves but for God.

In recognition of all the work with Sunday Club over the years, Mr Cowburn presented gifts to Sharon Bawden and Phillip Robinson. The Sunday club finished in December and Mr Cowburn said he hoped god would them in another way.

The service concluded with the celebration of Holy Communion.

The collection of “Grace Jars” for Children’s Hospice raised £185.92.
