Young farmers from the Helston area have presented the first of many cheques to a hospice charity.

Members of Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club presented a cheque for £355 for St Julia's Hospice - the results of carol singing last month - to a representative of Cornwall Hospice Care.

The members also learnt more about their chosen charity of the year when they met at Helston Football Club for a talk by Karen from Cornwall Hospice Care.

The Cornish charity has two hospices, Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia's Hospice in Hayle.

The club has specified that the money they raise this year goes to their local hospice, St Julia's.

Suzanne Bray, from the club, said: "It was interesting to learn the full extent of the care they offer, not only helping the patient with the life-threatening illnesses, offering them practical, emotional and spiritual support, but also supporting their family and carers."

The service the hospices provide is free to the patients. Members learnt the cost of some of the specialist equipment required, with the charity relying heavily on voluntary contributions to keep the hospices running.
