THE Falmouth Tuesday morning league commenced their 2009 programme for the Ladies Triples, played in excellent conditions. writes Ron Medlyn.

Chacewater’s Carnations were starting the season as league leaders and were to play Penryn’s Forget-Me-Nots. The Carnations, skipped by Bernie Warren, Dot Dunstan number two and Sue Rodker leading, made a good start to collect five shots from the first two ends, but the Forget-Me-Nots immediately replied with a five on the very next end and followed this up, taking five ends in succession to take a 16-9 lead. Although the Carnations took three from the 13th end, the Forget-Me-Nots ended the game by taking two sets of three to win 22-12 over the Carnations.

The Forget-Me-Nots, skipped by Christine Syer, Liz Swadling at number two and Penny Drennan leading, showed they are far from out of the reckoning, especially with Pat Jose waiting in the wings. The Carnations slip off the top spot and are now in third place in the league.

Constantine’s Sunflowers, skipped by Yolande Drayson, welcomed back Jenny Hosking to their team at number two, with Chrisie Hoyland leading. They were to play Falmouth’s Tulips, skipped by Linda Amos, Sue Beale number two and Liz Maunder at lead. This team have been slipping down the league and were looking to half the slide.

The Sunflowers made a good start and were soon 8-2 up after seven ends. After 11 ends the Sunflowers still led 10-4 and with four ends to play the Tulips had it all to do. They did manage a 2-2-1 on the last three ends, but it was not enough to stop the Sunflowers taking their first win and points of the season and climb off the bottom, winning 11-9 whereas the Tulips continue to fade away.

Falmouth’s Poppies skipped by Maureen Edwards, Pauline Moyle number two and Roz Farley leading, were expecting a tough encounter with Mylor’s experienced Bluebells skipped by Ann Sewell, Jean Parke number two and Betty Stuart leading.

The Bluebells won the first two ends to lead 2-0, but they were then destined to stay on two for the next six ends as the Poppies went into a 12-2 lead. They soon followed this by taking five shots on the ninth ends to lead 17-3 and an upset was surely on the cards. However, now it was the Poppies who got stock on 17 and for the last seven ends did not score another point – but the damage had been done and they limited the Bluebells to only one or two shots and the Poppies went on to win 17-11.

Mylor’s Cornflowers skipped by Lucie Sulch with Sylvia Morris number two and Margaret Colthorpe leading, were being held at 5-5 after six ends by Stithians Speedwells skipped by Jill Tregunna, Margaret Stribley number two and Maureen Pascoe leading.

The Speedwells then went ahead to lead 10-9 after 11 ends, but the Cornflowers then ran into a purple patch to score 2-3-4 in successive ends. This was enough to win the match 18-12 after a plucky display from the Speedwells.

Falmouth’s Marigolds skipped by Jackie Medlyn, Jean Hards number two and Christine Williams leading, were just ahead at 5-4 after six ends against Falmouth’s Hyacinths skipped by Judy Bobin, Christine Chatterton number two and Angela Angel at lead. The Marigolds then settled into some good form and took the next seven ends in succession to hold a massive lead 26-4 after 13 ends.

The Hyacinths could only master one more shot and the Marigolds ended the game with a three to win 29-5 and shoot to the top of the league on shot average.
