Alan carey’s first game in charge of Falmouth Town ended in defeat as Holsworthy put together a good all- round team performance that brought to an end their run of four consecutive defeats at a windswept Bickand Park on Saturday.

New manager Carey, introduced five new faces into the line-up and they, coupled with the absence of Dave Rawlings (suspension) and Neil Slateford (playing for Cornwall Youth team), led to a display that looked good in patches but showed that there is still a lot of work to do.

Robert Carey was the first to pose a threat to the visitors as he cut in from the right towards goal, but he was brought down right on the edge of the area with the resultant free-kick being shot wide.

A few minutes later Holsworthy defender Wayne Riley timed his tackle to perfection to deny Dan Stidwell, as he closed in on goal.

Holsworthy then launched an attack of their own which resulted in Levi Landricombe seeing his 20 yard shot cannon back off the crossbar.

Town forced a corner which saw Holsworthy keeper Dean Chidley punch the ball out and when it was returned into the middle he caught it just as Carey was shaping up to head it goalwards.

Sam Hunter was the next Town player to test Chidley, bringing a fine low save and then a few minutes later he was out of his goal quickly to narrow the angle well and force Carey to shoot just wide of the far post.

Holsworthy took the lead on the half hour when, following a quick break on the left the ball was played into the middle where Town keeper Chris Symons blocked a close range shot but the ball fell for Sam Cameron to shoot home from close range.

Town went back on the attack and Sam Hunter hit a looping shot which Chidley just caught right on the goal line.

Holsworthy doubled their lead two minutes into the second half when a speculative 25-yard lob from out on the left by Landricombe caught in the wind and flew over the stranded Symons into the far corner of the net.

Town pushed forward again and Adam Trudgian tried a snap shot from just inside the area which brought another good save out of Chidley.

A few minutes later Carey’s shot was blocked on the line by a couple of defenders who, somehow managed to clear it away despite Dan Stidwell closing in on them.

Ten minutes into the half Matt Moore came on to replace Glen Squires in a bid to boost the midfield.

Falmouth forced a few corners but Chidley and his defenders were in no mood to give anything away and nothing came from them.

Holsworthy then launched a counter-attack which resolved in a long shot hitting the foot of the post with the Town players looking on.

The visitors wrapped up the game and the points with ten minutes to go. Veteran substitute Alan Clarke went on a fine run down the right touchline, just keeping the ball in play, and crossed the ball into the middle where Landricombe shot home through a crowded area.

Town fought back though and a corner was only cleared as far as the hard working Trudgian and he deservedly fired home from the edge of the area for what was to prove nothing more than a late consolation goal.

Next Saturday Falmouth travel to Penryn Athletic in the Cornwall Senior Cup (2.30pm) but on the Friday before, Falmouth Reserves entertain Penryn Reserves in the Jolly’s Combination League with a 7.30pm kick-off.
