Wendron bounced back from last week’s defeat at St Austell to pick up a vital three points at home to Millbrook.

At a windswept underlane the home team tactically out-manoeuvred their opponents to record their fourth win of the season.

Wendron opened the scoring after 23 minutes. A long through-ball by Mike Newbury sent Marcus Smith clear and he coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. The home side almost doubled their lead eight minutes later when a short corner by Jason Barber found Justin Searle unmarked on the edge of the box but his powerful shot only found the side netting. Smith could have bagged his second on 42 minutes when good work by Dave Toy created another shooting chance but this time the keeper saved well.

Wendron continued to dominate in the second half with the lively Smith bringing another fine save from the visiting keeper.

A slick passing move between Barber and Searle created a chance for Paul Weaver to slide an inch perfect pass to Smith but his shot rattled the post.

It was Smith again who had the chance to put the game beyond Millbrook on 58 minutes.

Jason Barber won possession in midfield and spread the ball wide for the advancing Ed Timmons whose fabulously weighted pass sent Smith scampering down the left.

After cutting inside he hit a left foot drive which brought the save of the match from Dan Pencollins in the Millbrook goal.

After 75 minutes tricky winger Kyle Talbot made a good run down the right, his pass found Weaver who bounced the ball back to Barber whose low shot was again smother by the keeper.

Millbrook forced several corners near the end of the game and one of these resulted in a goalmouth scramble from which Bryan Scoffin made a good stop from close range.

After the game manager a pleased Gary Pascoe, said: “A very committed performance from our player’s today. They stuck to the game plan and out-passed their opponents in very windy conditions. Millbrook tried to physically dominate us but the boys responded well and I thought referee Kevin Knowles controlled the game superbly.

“Our back four were very solid and Bryan Scoffin only had one save to make in the whole game. We were under a bit of pressure to get a result…had we lost, Millbrook would have gone above us in the table. I think two defeats in our last six league games is decent form for a side in the bottom four.”
