The first road safety conference for children is being hosted by a Helston primary school.

The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) Conference is being held tomorrow morning at St Michael’s Primary School.

Members of Cornwall county council’s Road Safety Unit will be running the event and a number of schools from Helston and the Lizard will be attending.

Four junior road safety officers from years five and six at each primary school will attend the event, where they will share their experiences and work together to increase safety for children on the roads.

Police community support officers will give their help over the course of the morning.

Greg Foxwell, project co-ordinator, said: “Holding a JRSO conference allows us to take the opportunity to thank all of the schools and PCSOs for their valuable work in promoting road safety in their schools and local communities. We hope it will allow the children to share ideas and go back to their schools with even more enthusiasm.”

The schools taking part in the conference include St Michael’s Primary School, Garras School, Landewednack School, St Keverne School, Nansloe School, Sithney School and St Martin-in-Meneage School.

The scheme allows children to develop road safety skills and become safer pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and decision making while helping them to highlight road safety issues within their school and surrounding community.

A total of 62 primary schools in Cornwall are currently taking part in the JRSO scheme.
