The new proposed logo for Cornwall Council could be put on the back burner.

It has provoked so much discussion, David Whalley, the leader of the county council has asked the implementation executive to look again at the decision and has done a U-turn.

The meeting will be on Thursday.

“Although it is now too late for the matter to be part of the formal agenda I am willing to bring this forward for discussion. But before any decision is taken at our formal meeting on January 29 I would like to open this out for discussion through the local media,” said Mr Whalley.

The U-turn by the leader is hugely embarrassing although he has been accused of ignoring the views of the majority of the electorate ever since the new logo was announced.

A huge petition has already been drawn up opposing the logo, costing in excess of £45,000 and possibly much more, the majority of opponents claiming there current logo is good enough.

The latest move follows a meeting Mr Whalley had with new council chief executive Ken Lavery who is understood to have urged councillors to resolve the controversial issue once and for all in light of more pressing matters facing the changes to unitary government.

Graeme Hicks, an opponent of the proposed logo said it was an “embarrassing clim, bdown for Mr Whalley” while another critic Mark Kaczmarek from Lanner said people had been outraged at the proposed logo, adding that Cornwall’s identity was being eroded.
