Anti arms trade activists occupied the roof of a Helston gun company this morning.

Two young people from the group called Stop Kernow Arms Trade clambered onto the roof of Helston Gunsmiths, located on Water-ma-Trout industrial estate at 7am this morning.

The aim was to highlight what the group says is the “irresponsibility” of the arms trade.

Activist Danielle Scudamore, 20 from Falmouth, who climbed onto the roof alongside Paul Walker, aged 25, from Penryn said: “In 2007, the UK sold weapons to 11 of the 13 countries identified as being locations with at least one armed conflict in 2006.

“It is hard to determine where weapons will eventually end up, and arms manufacturers have a vested interest in keeping things this way. Around 90 per cent of casualties in armed conflicts are caused by small arms, which are used for domestic repression by corrupt regimes and to prolong violent conflict.

The pair made their own way down from the roof after a short time.

Helston Gunsmiths deals in small arms, light weapons, manufacturing, refurbishment and supply of components to police forces, defence forces and the gun trade as well as forensic services.

When contacted by the Packet no one from Helston Gunsmiths was available to comment.
