Cornwall county council is to ask the Government to delay staging elections to the new Cornwall Council until October 22, this year to enable them to be held on the basis of 123 councillors for a full four year term of office.
Normally elections would have taken place in June on the current 82 divisions.
Members have been told that while it was important for elections to be held as soon as possible, staging them on the current 82 electoral boundaries in June could result in a further election taking place in May 2010 .
County Council Leader David Whalley said: “Following extensive discussions with the district councils, we have agreed we need a solution which will give Cornwall a council which is based on 123 Councillors and which will last until 2013.”
The Boundary Committee will not be able to complete its work on drawing up the new electoral divisions in time for the elections to be held on June 4.
