A touch of nostalgia will be brought to the stage in Mawnan Smith when the village holds its 30th annual pantomime.

Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates is the pantomime chosen for this landmark occasion and a cast of 30 people are busy in the final stages of rehearsals to make sure the anniversary is marked well.

In tribute to past production, the original tap dancing troupe - who have not appeared for over a decade - will be making a fond return to the stage.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, opening night on Wednesday, February 4 will be gala night, with a pasty supper and the audience encouraged to bring their own alcoholic accompaniment to the Memorial Hall.

Performances then take place on the follow Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with an additional matinee performance on the Saturday afternoon.

Producer Marian Collins said the rehearsals were going well, adding: "I'm quite pleased with it."

She thanked everyone who had helped make the scenery and costumes, adding that they alone were enough of a reason to attend the shows.

The production will include a surprise local twist and audience members are encouraged to guess exactly who is playing the crimson hawk.

Hannah Ray plays Robinson Crusoe, with Percy Lawry as the dame, Beth Lawry as Captain Bowsprit and Cassandra Perry as Captain Bowsprit's daughter. Evie Payne plays the dame's son Willie, with Benita Payne as Polly Perkins.

Villainous Black Beard is played by Tony Grimmer, with Margaret Lugg as his accomplice Patch and Mr Grimmer's grandson playing the part of his parrot.

The story sees Willie Crusoe in love with Captain Bowsprit's daughter, but the captain does not think Willie is good enough for his Bessie, until Robinson Crusoe has a trunk left to him by his uncle Horatio Benbow.

Unbeknown to the Crusoes, the infamous pirate Blackbeard overhears their conversation with the Bowsprits and is determined to get hold of the treasure map that is found inside the trunk.

Tickets cost £8 for the gala night - to include the pasty supper - with £5 for the other nights and £4.50 for the matinee. They can be bought at both Spar and Hammer and Hoe in the village.
