THE Falmouth Bowling Club’s Men’s Triples competition continued on Sunday morning in pleasant blue skies and winter sunshine.

The match of the day was Stithians Ranchers skipped by Harry Barnes, Edwin Watson number two and David Rickard leading. A tough trio for anyone to handle against Falmouth/Chacewater’s Frostbites, skipped by David Winnan, Chris Instance number two and Paddy McMullen leading, also an excellent triple.

The Ranchers made a good start to lead 7-4 after ten ends. The Ranchers skip, Harry Barnes, was in good form and denied the Frostbites end after end from scoring shots. With the score after 14 ends 12-9 to the Ranchers, who then collected five shots on the next end to lead 17-9. However, the very next end the Frostbites hit back with a five to reduce the lead again to only three shots. On the last end the Ranchers lead David Rickard put his first bowl touching the jack. This gave the Ranchers the start they wanted as they then left the head alone to play positional bowls as the Frostbites tried to remove the bowl. Eventually the bowl did get hit and the jack sprang to a waiting positional bowl and so the Ranchers won this most entertaining game 19-15.

Another cracking match was between Helston’s Dancers, led by Russell Dawes, Terry Channon number two and Derek Summers leading against Redruth’s Reds, led by Barry Kessell, Terry Simmons number two and Sam Cann leading.

After eight ends the Dancers led 5-4, but were to put some distance between them and the Reds by winning the next three ends to lead 12-4 after 11 ends. The Reds then took a two and a three to reduce the lead to 9-12, but a three from the Dancers gave them a six-shot cushion to play out the last three ends. The Reds managed another three shots, but the Dancers just did enough to hold on to win 16-12.

Falmouth’s Packets led by Paul Bobin, John Bobin number two and Doug Moyle leading were hoping for a win against Carnon’s Cavaliers led by Doug Thomas, Mike West number two and Ron Wright leading.

The Packets were in for a shock as the Cavaliers went into a 13-5 lead after ten ends with Dough Thomas bowling extremely well.

Things were to get much worse for the Packets as the Cavaliers collected a four and a three to lead 20-5 after 13 ends and there looked no way back for the Packets as the Cavaliers cruised to the winning post with a very impressive 26-10 win – a great result for them.

League leaders Falmouth’s Waisters led by David Perrin, John Maunder number two and Paul Jordan leading, were in action against Mawnan’s Brass Monkies led by Chris Gee, Tony Stevenson number two and Don Hall leading. The Waisters were expected to dominate this game, but the Monkies had other ideas and made life difficult. After ten ends the Waisters led 12-7, but went on to collect 2x3’s in succession to lead 18-7, a comfortable lead, the honours for the last seven ends were shared, so the Waisters won this game 23-14.

Falmouth’s Jets led by Melville Angel, John Daly number two and Matthew Corney leading, were matched against Bickford Smiths Miners led by John James, Cyril Bayliss number two and Ray Hocking leading. After five ends the Miners led 7-1 and were bowling well, but a determined fight back by the Jets reduced the score to 7-8 after nine ends. The Jets then capture three and a five to jump into the lead 12-8. However, the Miners picked up the pace of the game and replied with a 5-1-2 to retake the lead 16-12 after 13 ends. With one end to play the Jets somehow managed to score three shots to win the game 20-17. What a great game of bowls enjoyed by both teams alike as the Bickford chaps are great sports and turn up every week to enjoy their bowls.
