WHILE RNAS Culdrose will have been happy with three points and their fourth straight win with victory over Lugdvan on Monday, in truth the 5-1 scoreline flattered the home side and shooting practice has been ordered for this week’s training session.

The Airmen have been flying high since the Christmas break but with a number of fixtures coming up in quick succession they will need to improve their accuracy in front of goal if they are going to keep moving up the Jolly’s Combination League table.

Having conceded well over a hundred goals in the league Ludgvan, were expected to prove an easy task for Culdrose. However, on the day of the village’s feast Ludgvan were able to call on a few reinforcements, who play football at a higher level, to help them overcome the Navy side - and for the first 20 minutes it looked like an upset might be on the cards.

In soggy and windy conditions the home side took the game to the visitors and smashed an effort against the crossbar after only five minutes.

In fact it took Culdrose until 20 minutes before they got their first effort on goal – Keiron Lovett picking up the ball outside the area and firing an effort just over the right hand post.

However, with that chance Culdrose grew in confidence and began to play simple football. They got the ball out wide at every opportunity and started getting crosses into the box to test the nervous Ludgvan backline.

As a result they started to get shots on target but, in doing so, found the home keeper in inspired from as he made three good saves in quick succession.

However the breakthrough finally came on 25 minutes when Chris Morris, who led the line well up front, picked up the ball and went wide before knocking the ball back to Dave Devlin on the edge of the area.

He attempted to chip the keeper but saw his effort strike the crossbar before falling to right back William Gibson who was able to knock it into unguarded net.

From then on it was one-way traffic as Culdrose set about putting the game to bed before half-time. However, a series of missed headers and good saves kept the game in the balance.

However, the visitors did get another goal before the break when Devlin won the ball in the middle of the park, ran past one challenge before hitting a through-ball to Morris, who from the edge of the area fired past the keeper.

The same format continued in the second-half with Culdrose adding a third within seconds. From the kick-off Gibson stole possession and played the ball into John Tomkins. He passed to Paul Cury who, with his unfavoured left foot, hit an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner.

In the next five minutes Culdrose had half a dozen efforts at goal from Devlin, Lovett, Morris and Chris O’Hare but again a combination of keeper and poor finishing kept the score line down.

Then on 58 minutes Chris Morris picked the ball up 25 yards out and from the left-hand side of the area chipped the ball over the keeper’s head and into the far corner of the goal for 4-0.

Chris O’Hare then added fifth shortly after when John Tomkins squared the ball to him and he hit an accurate right foot shot inside the post. However, Ludgvan did get a goal back as Culdrose grew complacent. Devlin was the culprit bringing down one of their forwards in the box to allow home side to score from the spot.

All in all Culdrose had 31 shots at goal, 20 which were saved, four that went wide, five that went over and two which were blocked by a defender.

After shooting practice Culdrose will be in action against local rivals Helston on Saturday.
