The Helston and Kerrier music society got "back on track" in a winter concert playing the work of composers Hummel and Rutter.

The concert on January 24 wowed a receptive audience at Helston's St Michael's Church, who heard the work of forgotten pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who was a pupil of Mozart's and the more familiar sounds of John Rutter's requiem.

David Burleigh managed to find the languished works of Hummel online and presented ready for the concert. Malina Bowman provided a soprano to Rutter's requiem, allowing the audience to enjoy a solo vioce.

Grace Barnes from the society said: "I feel this was our best concert and it has really established us again."

Accompanying the choir was a small group of instrumentalists.

Ken Northey said: "The audience found their fine and sympathetic playing enhanced the whole concert bringing colour and emphasis to the sound."

He added that it was great to see such a large and enthusiastic audience.

However with only 14 members, the society could benefit for a few singers to join.

Mr Northey said: "A shortage of men is almost endemic to all choirs these days. Valiantly as the tenors and basses coped, they need more voices."

Anybody wanting to join the society can do so on: 01326 560387, 565774 or 561102.

Rehearslas for the next concert in June start on Tuesday, February 10.
