A tireless champion of Helston causes has lost the last battle with health.

Tess Nash, from Helston, has died at the age of 69. She was a regular correspondent to local newspapers, including the Packet.

She dedicated much of her life to fighting for what she believed in, with campaigns including saving post offices from closure, bringing to the fore the difficulties faced by disabled people living in rural areas and highlighting pensioners' rights.

In the past she has served as chairman of the St Ives branch of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and the UK's role in Europe was often the subject of letters to the media.

Jeff Mager, chairman of UKIP Cornwall, said: "Everyone who knew her found her to be honest, straightforward and direct, sometimes too direct but her heart was always in the right place."

He described her contributions in the press as "prolific," adding: "She will be sorely missed by all in UKIP."

Mr Mager said Miss Nash had been "deeply saddened" by the death of her brother last year.

She was admitted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro shortly before her death on January 21.

Her funeral is taking place next Friday(February 6) at 4pm at Penmount Crematorium in Truro. A post-service gathering will then take place at the Ship Inn in Mawgan.
