Falmouth’s main post office will not be relocating to the town centre Spar shop, Post Office Ltd has confirmed in the last few minutes.

Suggestions that this would be the case were first revealed on the Packet front page last week.

The decision not to move the branch on The Moor to the Spar shop on Market Strand comes two and a half months after the end of public consultation into the proposal, on January 14.

At the time there was a huge public outcry from members of the public and councillors, as well as the town’s police inspector John Trott who spoke about his fears over public safety should the move take place.

Post Office Ltd decided not to continue with their proposal after a “change in circumstance.” A spokesperson said the decision was made in “mutual agreement” with the prospective sub postmaster at the Spar store.

However, the future of the post office branch remains in doubt.

Post Office Ltd has said the office will remain at its current location on The Moor while a “longer term solution” can be found.

During this time it will continue to be run by the interim sub-postmaster who has been at the helm since last year. Opening hours and services will remain unchanged.

Post Office managers are now due to meet with the town council to explain the current situation and to ask for their help in finding a permanent solution for Falmouth.
