More than 1,700 women come together in Falmouth today and hopefully raise more than £94,000 for Cancer Research.

All will be taking part in the Falmouth Cancer Research Race of Life which last year raised £97,180 and was one of the best support race for life events in the county and now a firm part of the town’s calendar of events.

So popular has the Falmouth race become in recent years, the entry list was some months ago. It is supported by Tesco and Packet Newspapers are the media partners and some of those taking part will come from further afield including Helston and The Lizard.

The 1,750 taking part on Sunday in the five kilometre run from the Gyllyngvase Car Park, along the sea front and around Pendennis Headland and back are expected to be supported by thousands of people, family and friends of those running and others who have either suffered cancer or know someone who has.

The race begins at 11am from the Gyllngvase Car Park following a traditional warm up. Many of those taking part will only jog or walk round the course while others will run, but everyone will be enjoying themselves and raising much needed cash and hoping to beat last year’s total.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2009 is the UK’s largest women only fundraising series. Women of all ages and fitness levels are taking part.

Many women who walk, jog or run are cancer survivors or will be participating in memory or celebration of a loved one whose life has been touched by cancer.

Scott Renken, Race for Life Area Event Manager for Falmouth, said: “Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes join in. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5k course. Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun but they all share the wonderful spirit of sisterhood and pride on the day.”

Other races taking part in Cornwall this year are Penzance on June 3, Eden Project on June 7 and the Truro Race for Life on July 12.
