Cornwall Councillor Doris Ansari has been elected to lead the 38 members of the Liberal Democrat Group in the new Cornwall Council. The Truro Tregolls Councillor has been asked to lead the Liberal Democrat Group which, as the party with the second most councillors, is the official opposition in the new Cornwall Council.
Councillor Ansari has long been a champion of local people and has promised to provide a strong voice and ‘eagle eye’ for Cornish communities.
She was a member of the former Cornwall county council and has held high office for some years.
Falmouth and Camborne MP Julia Goldsworthy said: “I would like to welcome the election of Doris Ansari as leader of the Lib Dem group at the new unitary council. Doris is a well-known local champion with an impressive track record of campaigning on the issues that matter to local people. Doris will continue to provide a strong voice for the people of Cornwall as the new council deals with the big challenges currently facing us – from rising unemployment and a lack of affordable social housing, to getting a fair funding deal from the government for our public services”.
