No one argues with the Gallagher brothers, not even the weather it appears. Prior to Oasis stepping on stage at the Eden Project on Tuesday night, torrential rain was hammering down on the domes and the heads of the sell-out audience on what was the most anticipated Cornwall gig of the year.

But as the lights came up the strains of “F**king in the Bushes” from the critically panned Standing on the Shoulders of Giants album the rain ceases and doesn’t reappear for the rest of the gig. Somebody up there knows that you don’t mess with Oasis.

And this band, to quote Noel, really is a “force of nature” the songs may be so familiar and they may have played them a thousand times but when they kick off with Rock ‘n’ Roll Star their strength is undeniable.

Liam is on good form tonight telling the audience he don’t want none of this cider nonsense and how good it is to be so close to the audience after their stadium shows, “You’re looking beautiful man”.

It’s probably the same package they’ve been playing for months but when the songs sound this fresh, exciting and relevant, and yes that includes Wonderwall, who can be disappointed?

And what a greatest hits package it is. Kicking off with rocker Lyla the crowd is palm of the band’s hand, signalling mass adulation, stripped down beer boys are hugging each other and shouting the lyrics directly into the faces of their equally pumped up mates.

But this is a good-natured crowd and the love of the band is palpable and practically every song invokes mass singalongs. I get a feeling of why the football terraces are so appealing to sections of our population, this is tribal.

The sound is massive with an equally impressive light show. Cigarettes and Alcohol follows, then Masterplan with Noel taking over vocal duties. One of my personal favourites Slide Away is for the ladies apparently it sounds fantastic. And they just keep coming, the crowd is going apes**t.

Liam’s first songwriting effort Songbird is pretty but it’s the monster songs that stir us, and they just keep on coming. Most bands would kill for a back canon like this.

What’s the Story Morning Glory is incredible, My Big Mouth, Supersonic, Live Forever, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Shock of the Lightning, first single off their last album, are all superb. Even b-side and Royle family theme Half a World Away gets an outing and Beatles pastiche Whatever.

Much has been made of the band’s lack of showmanship and of course the antagonism between the two brothers is well documented. It’s true they don’t talk to each other all evening and when Noel sings Liam wanders off, but they appear in good form tonight with Liam particularly looking like he’s really into it.

At one point he throws a tambourine into the crowd and when it doesn’t reach its intended target, a young girl, he goes away and gets another one and this time makes sure it does.

Noel gets the whole audience to shout: “Get orf my Land” as he doesn’t get down to this part of the world very often and gets in an “Alright my Luuvers?”.

The encores are an incredible Champagne Supernova and their trademark Beatles cover I Am A Walrus and then they’re off from what has been the gig of the year, or any year for that matter. It was definitely the best Eden Session ever. As the 6,000 crowd leave the arena the rain starts again. It knows when it’s not wanted.
