The Queen has recognised 13 Cornish people on this year’s New Year’s Honours list.

Among them are Tom Henderson, founder of the Helston-based charity ShelterBox, which sends emergency aid to victims of natural disaster around the world.

He was given an OBE for services to humanitarian aid after it grew from being a Helston and Lizard Rotary Club charity run locally to a world Rotary Club project, affiliated to eight countries and helping more than a million people in 65 countries.

Also in the Helston area,77-year-old Sidney Johnson was honoured for his time given to the community in Helston.

A lifelong member of the Ruan Minor Methodist Chapel he has acted as the caretaker on a voluntary basis for many years.

In the Falmouth area MBEs have been given to Eric Dawkins, from Penryn, for services to the community in Penryn and Falmouth and John Hick, vice-president of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association, for services to the tourist industry.

The former English Heritage head of visitor operations for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Callie Saxty – whose work included the running of Pendennis Castle in Falmouth – was honoured for services to heritage.

Redruth woman Susan Greenwood, a specialist community public health nurse, was given an MBE for services to healthcare.

Foster carer Patricia Kelly from Hayle, now 81, has provided foster care to more than 50 children over the last 18 years.

Other recipients of the MBE include fashion designer Luella Bartley from Bodmin, Bude teacher Denise May and after school club leader Jean Messenger, MoD dog handler Sergeant Matthew Robertson from Saltash and Liskeard based Peter Thomas, formerly project director at Devonport, Interserve plc, for services to the defence industry.

Former member of the Council of the Duchy of Cornwall, Robin Broadhurst, CBE, has been appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
