After many years of development, the Green Corridor Trail for walkers, cyclists and horse has been opened between St Austell and the Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park .
The beautiful two mile route is entirely off-road and mostly follows the line of the dismantled Trenance Valley Mineral Railway, passing fascinating industrial reminders of how the China Clay Industry was once operated and offering wonderful opportunities to observe wildlife. It connects directly into the recently constructed Clay Trails, a network of about 14 miles that includes the Eden Project and Bugle.
The £500,000 trail has been built by Cornwall County Council with most of the funding coming from the South West Regional Development Agency. Important partners in the project have been Restormel Borough Council, Imerys Minerals Ltd, the main land owners, and Sustrans who have assisted with land assembly, design and supervision.
The route is especially welcomed by the Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park. Director David Owens reports that walkers and cyclists are already making use of the revamped museum and restaurant facilities following the opening of the Clay Trails almost exactly one year ago. The new route will provide an easy, safe and attractive link from the Park to St Austell Town Centre and should appeal to very large numbers of local residents as well as visitors.
