No longer is the Cornwall County ladies tennis team hanging around in the bottom group 7 of the Summer Inter County Cup annual grasscourt event.
Reaching the heights of Group 6 has been within the grasp of the Cornish ladies for many years and have tried to ignore the fact that this bottom group has been labelled as "the home for no hopers." The ladies are beaming after their group promotion last week played at the HSBC Sports and Social Club in Beckenham.
The team was Helen Stubbs (Truro), Zoe Lee (Hayle), Hannah Brownlee (Hayle), Emma Welch (St Austell), Michelle Turner (Camborne), Sophie Weedon (Wadebridge), Francesca Jackson (Bodmin) and Dinah Crellin, captain (Newquay).
Different to higher groups, group 7 has 8 counties starting off in 2 boxes and the counties in the top two positions get promoted.
Not one rubber was dropped in the first two days against South of Scotland and Cumbria .
Cornwall faced the team from Northants on day three and won 6-3 which meant they were in the promotion box battle.
A very strong team East of Scotland and eventual group winners were their opponents, the Cornish ladies having to face their top senior player and the 14-year-old Scottish Champion, lost 6 rubbers to 3 which meant the ladies had to win the last day to gain promotion.
Bedfordshire, potentially the toughest opponents, and after a day of tight matches Cornwall won 7-6 6-2 to win promotion.
