New Year’s Eve was “better than expected”, according to Falmouth police, with 12 crimes and 47 “incidents” recorded across the area during the end of year celebrations.
Alcohol related violence was the main cause of disorder, said Sergeant Dave O’Neill from Falmouth police station, but officers were also called to three cases of criminal damage to vehicles and one case of shoplifting between the hours of 6pm and 6am, New Year’s Eve night.
Sgt O’Neill said: “I have been here 20 years and in my opinion it was no worse or better than any other year.
“It was not bad at all, it was better than I thought it was going to be, with the way the country is at the moment. Most people were good humoured and we were very busy, but that’s normal.”
The police were called to a party in Budock Water, where a brawl had spilled out into the garden and five assaults were recorded to have taken place elsewhere in town.
Seven people were taken to the cells in total, including two who were arrested for affray outside Club International in St Georges Arcade and at least another ten were given orders to leave town, or bailed to report back to the police station at a later date.
Sgt O’Neill said: “There were 47 incidents we dealt with in 24 hours, ranging from missing persons to neighbourhood disputes and fire alarms to alcohol related domestic issues.
“And there were general calls for noisiness and the like, but generally speaking it’s been pretty good.”
